LIKEMOVING / JOURNAL01 — 138

Organize records separately from the turntable and furniture, with manageable packages and a clear receiving plan.

01

Prepare records as a collection, not loose shelf contents

Count the collection by shelf or catalog group and distinguish vinyl records from other disc materials. Keep each record in its suitable sleeve and jacket; do not begin an unfamiliar cleaning or restoration treatment on moving day. The Library of Congress recommends upright storage and handling discs by the edge or label area rather than the recorded surface. Discuss the protective enclosure and load arrangement for the actual collection with the packer. Use cartons suited to the format and filled weight, with support that prevents the contents shifting without forcing them tightly together. A small shelf moving within Tel Aviv may fit into several manageable packages; a collection moving to Givatayim may need a numbered sequence across many boxes. Avoid turning one large carton into a load the team cannot safely handle. Photograph existing jacket damage and identify valuable or unusually fragile editions separately.

02

Separate equipment and reconcile packages on arrival

Give each carton an inventory number and a short catalog range, keeping a copy of the list outside the boxes. Pack the turntable, amplifier and speakers as separate equipment, using their own model instructions for transport preparation; a dust cover is not automatically suitable shipping protection. Tell the mover where records will wait before loading and ask how exposure to heat, moisture and pressure from other loads will be avoided. Do not leave the collection in a parked vehicle as a convenient temporary store. At the new address, prepare a clean, dry receiving area and a suitable shelf location before opening every carton. Count the numbered packages, inspect their visible condition and note discrepancies while the packing is still available. Unpack in sequence so catalog groups do not become mixed. Confirm whether the order covers collection packing or only transport of cartons you have prepared, and keep any specialist assessment separate from a standard moving quote.
